Grampound Road V Callington

Home skipper Alex Ridd won the toss and elected to bat first in this rearranged Bank Holiday Monday fixture. David Hoskings got them off to an express start, and he and Thomas Orpe quickly put on 51 before Orpe was caught in the deep by Harry Sawyers off Adam Snowdon for 13. Hoskings was next to go for 41 which included 7 fours and a six, lbw to Sawyers, and Callington were glad to see the back of the dangerous Ravi Karanurathna for 18, when he was bowled by Aidan Libby, bowling offspin instead of his usual seamers. Charlie Hoskings was bowled by Rashard Fuller, playing his last game before jetting back to South Africa, and Chris Roberts, who had been in for 89 balls, was eventually caught behind by Joe White for 36, off Snowdon’s bowling. Most of The Road’s batsmen contributed, and Ridd hit 40 before Alex Mortimore had him leg before, and Alex Rust was run out thanks to a direct throw from Ollie Allsop. Lewis Sanders made 23 before being castled by Sawyers and Chris Willett was unbeaten on 16 as Grampound Road amassed 252-9 from their 50 overs. Sawyers took 3-66, and Snowdon 2-42 with Libby’s spinner’s yielding 1-18 from 10.

Aidan Libby and Toby May got the Callington reply off the ground with a stand of 30, when Libby was well caught at slip by David Hoskings off Roberts for 20. Nick Parker had made 11 when he fell lbw to Karunarathna, and May had made 20 when he snicked to keeper Willett off Sanders. Peter Tancock was going well, and after White went cheaply, he was joined by Fuller who was in the mood to go out with a bang as he hit 3 sixes and 3 fours. At the drinks break after 25 overs Callington were on 110-4 and at the same stage The Road were 109-3 so it was still game on. However, the break must have affected concentration and Karunarathna had Fuller caught by Hoskings for 34, and then the wheels came off as Allsop, Mortimore and Snowdon all went for a total of 4 runs between them. When Tancock was eventually out for 38, bowled by David Hoskings’ first delivery, there was little more to come, and Callington were dismissed for 146 in 37.4 overs. Karunarathna took 3-36 from 9 -36 from his 9 over spell.

Grampound Road (20 points) beat Callington (6) by 106 runs.
